Merit Badge Counselor System

We have implemented an online merit badge counselor system. Hosted through the University of Massacusetts, Lowell Community Lab, this allows anyone to search our current list of merit badge counselors.
The Greater Lowell Council could only provide a list of counsellors from back in 1996. Therefore we have put in some of the counselors that we know, and will add more as the information becomes available. If you want to be included, please email Shawn Ashe(Committee Chair) or Jim Dolan (Advancement Chair) and we will see that you are included. Please include a reference (Scoutmaster or Committee Chair) so that we can verify that you are a registered Scout Leader... safety first!!
The system allows for Scoutmaster to indicate which counselor they prefer thier Scouts to use for a specific badge. Any Scoutmaster who would like to indicate such, please send that information along to the same addresses above.

Serve New England

BSA image An organization designed to foster community service, Serve New England operates a monthly community food co-op. Through local organizations and recruiting, a team of self-organized volunteers coordinates the collections of fees, promotion, recording of volunteer service, and distribution of the food packages.

See the Schedule of Serve Distributions for 1999.

Adult Leader Job Descriptions

SM Patch image An organization such as this requires many people performing many functions. From a set of BSA documents, and updated a little for our own use, we list the job descriptions of the key leaders in our troop.

This Job Description page, will be updated with pack leader positions as well.. though that will only need the addition of the program people, as the committee leader jobs are similar.

"The Scout Law in Practice"

Image of Book An online version of the (very) old non-fiction book " The Scout Law in Practice", by Arthur A Carey. This book is an additional description of the meanings behind the points of the Scout Oath, Law and Motto as understood in 1915 (within a few years of the introduction of the scouting program to the United States).

Mr Carey interviewed a large number of "Sea Scouts," and summarized thier opinions of the meanings, as well as added a bit of his own experience, anecdotes, and historical references.

Cardboard Box Ovens

BSA image A summary of some information provided on the MacScouter site on how to make an oven out of cardboard boxes . We tried it out on the Fall camporee, with some success... some problems.

Scoutmaster Minutes

clock image A collection of some of the Scoutmaster Minutes that I have used over the last few months. Most are original, some are from the newsgroups or online forums.

I will add more as I come up with them.

The One Minute Scoutmaster

The principles of the One Minute Manager, as applied to the job of Scoutmaster have been humorously applied in this fun parody of the award-winning book. This page, The One Minute Scoutmaster, is both entertaining and informative. It gives us all something to think about.

Codemaster, the Wheel Code

The December 1996 issue of Boys Life had a fun project for young Scouts. "Codemaster", the wheel code machine, is an old-time favorite for creating secret codes and messages. I've redrawn the wheels, and posted them to make them easier to read. For a full description of the project, please see the magazine.

Deductability of Scouting

An article on the Tax Deductability of the time and money we all spend in support of the Scouting programs. This was written in 1995 (though little has changed on the basics), but as always... defer to a tax advisor on any questionable items.

Principles of Scoutmastership

BSA Logo

A Report of the Commission on Principles of Scoutmastership in Relation to Boy Development. This is one of the pamphlets published by the BSA in the last 20's as part of the Scouting Service Library.

Although the pamphlet is old and tattered, the information is just as true as if it were written today. This is a great summary of the basic concepts behind what Scouting is trying to do.

Aims & Methods of Scouting

BSA Logo

A summary of the changes over time of the definition of the Aims and Methods of the Boys Scouts of America program, as defined in the Scoutmaster's Handbooks.

Parent Information Package

The Notre Dame de Lourdes Troop 26 Parent Information Package is a booklet that is given to the parents of Scouts as they join the Troop. It is an overview of the troop program, activities, administration and structure.

It clearly defines the costs of joining the troop, as well as the expectations of support and discipline that are required to be a part of the program.

Latest Scouting26 Newsletter

Newsletter gif Here is the latest issue of On the Trail (March 99), our troop and pack newsletter. This file is in PDF format. The reader is common, but if you need it, it is available through the Adobe Acrobat web site.

The October and December 98 issues are also available online.

Religious Emblems Program

Religious Emblem Knot Training is complete, and we are ready to start some of our Scouts towards qualification for their Religious Emblems (see pg 624 of the Boy Scout Handbook). Resources are now being brought together at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church to start providing a program for those Scouts who want to start earning the Ad Altare Dei and Parvuli Dei emblems.

Multimedia Songbook

Music Gif An effort has begun to start a Troop Songbook, with both lyrics and melody (MIDI format). This new format will allow us to continue to collect and archive campfire songs without losing the accompanying tunes (face it, how many of can read music?).

Order of the Arrow Pocket Ribbon and Beaded Sash

OA Logo A set of instructions describing how to make a beaded pocket ribbon, often used as a replacement for the official Order of the Arrow ribbon that hangs on the button of the right pocket on the Boy Scout uniform. This is a much more interesting method of indicating membership in the order, requiring a little patience (but not much skill) to make.

The patterns I created for making an Order of the Arrow Beaded Sash may take a while to download, but I have finally reduced them to a reasonable size for putting on a single web page. In all, the images take about 150k, but you shouldn't need to download them too often (just once and print) if you are interested in attempting this project.

Discipline

Notre Dame de Lourdes Troop 26 operates under a 3-strike discipline code. The Troop leadership also maintains the ability to deal with attitude and behavior incidents with immediate feedback via standard behavior modification methods.

In an experimental stage, is a new program we call the Success Management Plan. Utilizing an adult mentor system, a Scout experiencing considerable behavior problems goes through a self-discovery process, as well as plans out a course of corrective action that must be contracted with the Troop, his parents, his mentor and himself.

The Success Management Plan and troop newsletters are formatted using Envoy, an electronic document publisher. The free Envoy Reader and Netscape Plugin are available from the Tumbleweed Corp download page.
