Boy Scouts Help to Dig Graves

Boys of Troop 26 Assist Caretaker of St. Joseph's

Cemetary in Providing Burial Places for

the Dead During Epidemic

GROWTH OF SCOUT MOVEMENT

October 13, 1918, Lowell Sunday Telegram

During the epidemic crisis Troop 26 has been right in the line doing most commendable work, helping where vitally needed. Eight Scouts of the troop assisted the manager of St. Joseph's cemetery in burying the dead. The number of dead brought to the cemetery was such that the caretaker needed help to perform the last task and at one time five graves were ahead of him to be filled. In this emergency the Boy Scouts came to the rescue and, although the task was a very sad one for the boys, the Scouts pitched in witha will and performed it. This they did two days last week. The Scouts who assisted were eight of the largest boys in the troop, selected with a view to their ability to do the work.

Scout and His Mother Die

This troop has also suffered a loss in the person of Scout Edward Malo, one of the leading Scouts for the troop, and much sadness is felt by the Rev. Father Denis, O.M.I., the scoutmaster, and the members of the troop in the loss of the young Scout by his death.

The mother of the young Scout was also taken ill and died a few days later, which has rendered the case doubly sad. Mrs. Malo has been an excellent friend of the Scouts and performed the task of making the Scout suits for the boys of Troop 26 and of other troops as well.

There will be no meeting of the fife and drum corps this week, meetings being postponed until further notice on account of the epidemic.

Liberty Loans Work

The Scouts started in on their work on the Fourth Liberty loan and have now begun the task of serving as "the gleaners after the reapers." Scoutmasters are to each handle their own troop selling force and make a record of sales on forms provided for the U.S. treasury department. The application blanks will be secured from the Liberty Loan Committee by this office and you can obtain them here for your troop.

The blank is the same as used by all and not a special Boy Scout blank this time, so a rubber stamp will be provided you at this office to mark every sale made by your Scouts, with space left for writing in Scout's name. Stamp application in upper left hand corner: this will help the Scouts in separating Scout sales.

National Headquarters has called for 100 percent service from the Scout field and expects a report from every Scoutmaster showing the work done by each Scout in his troop. Let every Scout try to sell at least one bond to show we have no slackers in our Lowell troops.
