Firefighters Challenge

Firefighters Bob Beane, Mike O'Donnell and Dick Latour

Three Lowell firefighters entered this year's regional "Firefighter Challenge" which was held in Haverhill, Massachusetts on September 16, 2000. Firefighters Robert Beane, Richard Latour, and Michael O'Donnell competed in the grueling event. This event seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession's rigors to the public. The competitors wear "Full Turnout Gear" when competing, which consists of full "Bunker Gear" and Scott Air Pac's are donned while competing. Then in pairs they simulate the physical demands of real life firefighting by performing a linked series of events including the 6-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life sized 175 pound "victim". They do this, as they race against themselves, their opponent, and the clock.

All three Lowell firefighters finished the course in respectable times. Robert Beane recorded a time of 2 minutes 53 seconds, this being his second year competing, Michael O'Donnell in his first year of competition registered a very good 3 minutes and one second. Richard Latour finished with the best time of the three Lowell participants with a 2 minutes 38 second time.

The posting of a time less than 2 minutes would allow participation in the nationals. Maybe next year we'll go to the nationals. Our hats go off to these fine representatives of our Department.
