Independence Day marks the occasion of Lithuania’s liberation from Russian domination in 1918. Unfortunately, that independence ended in 1940 with an occupation by Soviet forces in alliance with Nazi Germany. Lithuanians in Lowell kept the hope of sovereignty alive by celebrating Independence Day each year on February 16th with a flag raising at City Hall. In 1986, Father John Zuromskis stated, “This is a historic occasion. In raising these colors we show to the world that we are still very interested and dedicated to the cause of regaining freedom for Lithuania!”

With the breakup of the Soviet Union, Lithuanians revolted and declared their independence in 1990 and the dreams of Lowell's Lithuanians were finally realized.
