Italians in Lowell Web Exhibit
The Italian community of Lowell has had a long presence in the Mill City.
Originally migrating to Lowell as stone masons and craftsmen, the Italians soon brought over families and bought homes to stay as permanent residents in the city. The community formed religious and social organizations and became a major part of the parish at Saint Peter's Church on Gorham Street.
The original settlers came to live in the Flats, the South End and other neighborhoods but eventually branched out over the entire area going into business, entering the professions and continuing to contribute to Lowell's civic activities today.
