Return to People.

The following information was submitted by their granddaughter Gina  Oliva.

Diamondo and John Papaharris

Grandmother Diamondo (born 1896) and her brother Basil (Bill?) Vodinipsioti came to Lowell with  their father in 1913. Their father (name unknown) stayed in Lowell for a year and returned to Greece). Their name eventually became Johnson. Diamondo (age 16) married John Papachrisiou (later Papaharris) that same year. They were married by C. Papagregoriou in Manchester. Diamando and her brother work at the Boott Mills.

“When my grandfather came through Ellis Island they asked him "What is your father's name?" he said "Papa (meaning priest) Charisou", his first name.”  His last name was really Farmakis (Papacharasiou Farmakis). Somehow, the family last name became "Papaharris" and his first name John. John was always involved with food delivery. “He would drive a truck (with a horse, I guess)”.

The Vodinipsioti family was from Macedonia, “in the mountains”.  My mother speaks of a town called Grevena.  “My grandfathers’ family (Farmakis) was from Franya/Larissa - a suburb of Athens.”

Diamando and John Papaharris had three sons: Alexander (died at age 9 Months); Hercules (Rocky) in 1915 or 1916; and Robert (1917) and four daughters, born outside Lowell.

By 1919 (the year my mother was born), the family had moved to Nashua and shared a two family home with cousins, the Charles and Jenny Davaros family. A few years later, they moved to new York City.

My mother's Godfather was named Natsiopoulos (Natsios) and had a farm in Dracut.

Basil Johnson (grandmother’s brother) attended school in Lowell and spent his entire life in Lowell; he worked at the Boott mills repairing thread.

Rocky Papaharris (grandmother’s son) was born in 1916: later he married Helen Liatkes. Robert Papaharris lives in Connecticut.
