| Who
we are:
The Lowell Hellenic Heritage Association is a nonprofit organization with over 150 members and a Board of Directors listed on the right side of this page. In 1996, a group of Lowell area Hellenes set about to preserve the heritage of the Greek American community in the Lowell region. Our first project was an exhibit of the Greek community in the Lowell of the 1930's, which we called Acropolis of America: the Greek Community of Lowell. Between 1939 and 1940, Lowell constructed the North Common Village in the Acre section, and the heart of the Greek community. This led to a Diaspora of the Acre Greek Americans. At that time, we were urged to tell more of this story. We agreed! We have since established the Lowell Hellenic Heritage Association and we have set the goal of telling the story of our Greek American community from the arrival of the first immigrant in 1874 to the modern day. In 2001, we completed Acropolis of America II (1976-1929), which tells the story of our community from the arrival of the first Greek immigrant until 1929. In the fall of 2003 we completed Acropolis of America III, Passing the Torch, the years of 1940 to 1974 (the war years, the arrival of new immigrants and entry into the new era). This exhibit trilogy completed 100 years of Hellenic American presence in the Lowell area. Write us: The Lowell Hellenic Heritage Association P.O. Box 9602 Lowell, MA 01853
