Military
From Greater Lowell more than 1000 Greek American
men and woman served in WWII. Forty made the
supreme sacrifice, including two pairs of brothers, James and David Scondras,
John and James Vurgaropulos. The "Cold War" following WWII, the Korean conflict in the early
1950’s, and the Vietnam conflict in the
1960’s and 70’s continued the demand for military manpower
though not
in the same numbers. Combat
medic Peter Tsirovasiles and
Marine Peter Samaras died in
Vietnam. Returning veterans of
WWII formed the Greek American
Legion, Post No. 1, which remains
a viable organization today.
