SportsEarly immigrants concentrated on earning a living and establishing their families, but their children immersed themselves in American ways. They learned the new sports in pick-up games in parks and fields across the city where they competed against an Olympic-style competition in Pawtucketville. In 1920, Lowellians raised funds to send discus thrower James Andromedas to the Olympics, representing the United States. In 1919, the Marathon Athletic Social Club sponsored a city-wide athletic competition; Lowell Mayor Perry D. Thompson served as referee.
