ReligionThe Greek immigrants celebrated their first Divine Liturgy in Lowell in 1893. In 1908, the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church opened its doors in the Acre. Lowellians, inspired by the design of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, had built the first Byzantine-style church in America. Political and religious turmoil in Greece influenced events in Lowell, and led to the establishment of Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in 1924 and St. George Greek Orthodox Church in 1928. Despite these old-country upheavals, ethnic bonds remained strong due to traditions such as the celebration of holy name days, Greek Independence Day, weddings, and baptisms.
