Immigration Over one hundred years ago, the first Greek immigrant men crossed the sea in the dark holds of ships in search of a better life. When they arrived in Lowell, they took any jobs available, no matter how long the hours, how hard the work, or how low the pay. Crowded into run-down tenements, they faced icy winters and steaming summers. As the community grew, Greeks built a church and founded a school. In one generation their children propelled themselves into the business, professional, and political mainstream. Two sons of Lowell immigrants eventually sought the American presidency.
