Martha
Mayo, Director of the Center for Lowell History at the Patrick J.
Mogan Cultural Center, recommended a feature on William C. Coughlin,
a poet who lived and wrote in Lowell during the late1800s. The two
poems that we include depict life in his his era. The Merrimack
Valley has a strong literary tradition that stretches back to the
earliest poets in America. From Anne Bradstreet and John Greenleaf
Whittier, to Robert Frost and Jack Kerouac, this region has its
share of major writers. There are others who are less well known,
historical figures whose work has been forgotten. It is important
to remember our cultural roots. In upcoming issues of "The
Bridge Review" we will feature other "Lost Voices"
from the region.
